Write your spouse a letter.

At the start of the year, my spouse and I exchanged love letters, prompted by an external spur. It’s fortunate that we received this encouragement, as it led us to a practice we wouldn’t have started otherwise. These letters unearthed vital feelings and thoughts that had remained unvoiced. Without them, these sentiments may have remained unshared, and the wonderful outcomes that followed – strengthening our bond – might never have occurred.

Writing love letters is a heartfelt and direct method to nurture and deepen intimacy, not just in romantic relationships but also with friends, children, parents, or anyone significant to you.

Sometimes, talking can be challenging. Writing allows you to thoughtfully articulate matters of importance. It lets you ponder, rewrite, and perfect your message before sharing it.

One effective approach is free writing. Start with a pen or keyboard and let your thoughts spill out uncensored. It’s a self-discovery tool, often unveiling hidden thoughts and emotions. Use this raw material to craft your letter, refining it to convey precisely what you wish to share with your partner.

Alternatively, you can follow a structured template for your letter. Here’s a suggested format, which you can use as is or adapt to better fit your feelings:

· I am writing because I want to share with you that…

· I admire in you…

· I enjoy it when…

· It pleases me to see you…

· I’m hopeful for more…

· I would like less…

· I reminisce about doing… (a nice activity we stopped doing)

· I’m curious to try… (something new)

· I hope we can move past…

· I’m weary of….

· Sometimes, I fear…

· I miss…

· You mean so much to me because…

· I aim to be for you….

· I cherish being with you because…

· Looking ahead, I hope that we…

This exercise has the most impact when both partners engage in it. Reading your letters to each other can amplify their meaning. Even as a one-way communication, a love letter can

be incredibly moving. If you need to express something but find it difficult to say it out loud, write it down.
