Confirmation

In confirmation, baptised Christians affirm their faith and the promises made at their baptism.

Youth confirmation

In Finland, most church members are confirmed in the year when they turn 15. Confirmation camps are extremely popular among the youth, even among non-members. Many young people who have not been baptised as an infant request to be baptised before or during their confirmation camp. Participation in a confirmation camp doesn't oblige you to be confirmed.

Confirmation classes are more than just an introduction to the essentials of the Christian faith. They prepare young people for adult life in the broader sense of the word and are an essential phase in their development towards responsible adulthood. Confirmation camps are also places where new, long-lasting friendships are made.

International confirmation schools are held in various languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, and Russian.

Adult confirmation

Espoo parishes hold adult confirmation classes on-demand in small groups or one-on-one. International adult confirmation classes are often baptism classes because many participants have not been baptised. However, baptised Christians can attend the same classes to learn more about the Christian faith from a Lutheran point of view and about the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. These classes can – but need not – lead to baptism or confirmation and full church membership.

Confirmation gives you the right to act as godparents at baptism, participate in Holy Communion independently, and be a candidate in parish elections at 18. You need not be confirmed for a church wedding, but you are required to complete confirmation school.
