Naming your child

When naming a child, feel free to be creative but within limits. The Names Act of 2015 gives clear guidelines about what given and surnames are possible. A child may have up to four first names and can also receive a compound surname from their parents. If in doubt, contact the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) for a preliminary decision concerning the names.

At the baptism ceremony, the child's name is announced at the very beginning, since in baptism, God calls the child by name as his own.
