Godparents
The baptised child, youth, or adult will receive one or more godparents at baptism. A godparent is a special and important adult companion who offers spiritual support throughout life. In many cases, the relationship with a godparent lasts a lifetime.
Godparents are usually close family members or friends. Their role is to support the individual's journey in the Christian faith. A person who is not a church member can serve as a witness to the baptism, walking alongside the baptised person and their family.
At least one godparent must be a confirmed church member who professes the Evangelical Lutheran faith. Additionally, godparents can also be members of other Christian churches or religious communities that recognise baptism performed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The godparents' details (names, personal identification numbers, and home parish) should be provided on the baptism form given to the pastor before the baptism ceremony.
